The Method: Improvisation and Score Writing for Groups
Learn how to create entirely improvised works that sit within a predetermined aesthetic framework.
What is The method?
This is a method of score creation for group improvisation, developed in collaboration with Sophie Gargan, Gabriella Mersi, Christina Guieb, and Ella Williams. The aim: create entirely improvised works that sit within a predetermined aesthetic framework. Freedom and agency for performers. Delicately nuanced choreographic voice.
We work together to develop a 'macro-code' and write scores for performative group improvisations. Our focus: enjoying the experience of navigating space, time, and energy together while exploring the possibilities for surprise, awareness, presence, connection, and risk that improvisation enables.
We unpack different creative motivations and analyze the process of collective and individual decision making. This workshop opens up discussion around the intersections of process & product, performance & creation, 'success' & 'failure', choice & chance.
